Canons, etc

Programme Note

Canons, etc is a set of 32 movements for solo piano inspired by Bach’s Goldberg Variations. As musicologist Ralph Kirkpatrick has pointed out, much of the Goldberg Variations is arranged in a repeating tripartite pattern of canon, followed by genre piece, followed by what Kirkpatrick terms arabesque. The interval of each successive canon increases by one diatonic interval, so the first canon is at the unison, the second canon is at the second, and so on. Canons, etc takes its lead from this scheme. There is a tripartite pattern of canon, followed by character piece, followed by chorale, repeated 12 times to give 36 movements in total. The interval of each successive canon increases by one chromatic interval, so the first canon is at the unison, the second canon is at the minor second, the third canon is at the major second, and so on until the final canon is at the major seventh. The title of the piece refers back to my 2017 wind ensemble piece, Chorales, etc; here the chorales are relegated to the category of etc.
