Litany in Troubled Times
Programme Note
In May 2024, I wrote a short anthem for the Lay Clerks of Ripon Cathedral entitled ‘From Lightning and Tempest’. The text is an extract of The Litany from The Book of Common Prayer, and I chose it due to its resonance with contemporary worries about the climate crisis. I decided to expand this movement into a larger set, and when I came to do so in the early part of 2025 the world had certainly not become any safer or more stable. Litany in Troubled Times is intended as a meditation on the precarious state of the world in which we live.
