The King's Service
Programme Note
The King’s Service consists of settings of the Morning and Evening Canticles and the Office of Holy Communion for unaccompanied SATB choir. The piece was written for The Choir of King’s College London and their director Joseph Fort.
The King’s Service canticles [are] beautifully fluid. (Ken Walton, The
Scotsman, 24th March 2022)
Rounding off the album is Nesbit’s setting of the Evening Canticles, perhaps the most straightforward music in this collection, though, as the composer points out, the Magnificat is not a conventional expression of joy. (Ivan Moody, Gramophone Editor’s Choice, May 2022)
an eloquent, reflective a cappella evening service (Clare Stevens, Choir and Organ, July 2022)
Nesbit’s highly compact [of the evening canticles] has an uplifting undertone and is almost mesmeric in its chanting, melodic repetitions, and perhaps because it lacks the organ, its meditative atmosphere is enhanced. (Gary Higginson, MusicWeb International)
