Three Pieces for Ensemble
Programme Note
The three movements of Three Pieces for Ensemble were written for different occasions in the years 2016-2020, and have been adapted here to form a set. The first movement started life as a contribution to Encore!, a piece written by various composers for the London Sinfonietta’s 50th anniversary concert in 2018. The original version of the second movement was commissioned by East London Music Group in 2020 for their project Lockdown Miniatures. The final movement was written for a project I took part in as a fellow at Tanglewood Music Festival in 2016. Together the three pieces document a simplification in my style over the years in question, while I hope also complementing each other and adding up to more than the sum of their parts.
Listening blind, checking the programme after, [pieces] for viola by Edward Nesbit, horn by Colin Matthews and clarinet by Tom Coult stood out. (Fiona Maddocks, The Observer, 28th January 2018)
