Doctored Pictures

Programme Note

Doctored Pictures is an arrangement for percussion quartet of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Some of the arrangements are relatively literal, notably ‘The Old Castle’ and ‘Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks’. Others depart radically from their source material to the extent of being virtually unrecognisable – hence the idea of the pictures being ‘doctored’. Different movements focus on different timbres within the ensemble; in particular, four movements are scored for marimbas alone, and the Promenades – here entitled a Prelude and Interludes – are largely characterised by the sound of drums. Although the sixteen movements of Doctored Pictures are, with two exceptions, discrete and separated by silence, the piece nevertheless gradually works towards its climax in ‘The Hut in Hen’s Legs’, before closing with a hushed arrangement of ‘The Great Gate of Kiev’, here entitled ‘Bells’.
